Karaoke, a Japanese invention that lets us be a Mohammad Rafi or an Elvis Presley or Lata Mangeshkar in the privacy of our homes (or in the company of friends). Karaoke is a combination of two Japanese words kara, which means "empty" and Ĺkesutora which means "orchestra" is a form of interactive entertainment or video game in which amateur singers sing along with recorded music using a microphone and public address system. The music is typically a well-known pop song minus the lead vocal. Lyrics are usually displayed on a video screen, along with a moving symbol, changing color, or music video images, to guide the singer. In some countries, a karaoke box is called a KTV. Karaoke has a huge fan following in Japan and quite a few other countries, with dedicated karaoke bars peppering big cities. It is now also gaining fast popularity in Asia.
